Port Said

Port Said City is one of the well-known 3 Canal Cities, which are Suez, Port Said, and Ismailia. It is a coastal city by the Mediterranean Sea, and it overlooks the Suez Canal. To be precise, the city is located at the northern entrance of the canal. 

Also, the Suez Canal runs through the city, separating the entire neighborhoods of the govronormete from the district town and the last neighborhood in the city, which is Port Fouad.

The city spans an extensive land area of 1,344,961 square kilometers. The city is home to many well-known neighborhoods and districts, as well as many historical sites. 

Moreover, the city has a major historical importance thanks to the role it took in the war in the 60’s and 70’s. This is why Port Said has many important national events, the most well-known of which is Victory Day, which is annually celebrated on the 23rd of December. 

The name of the city was derived from the fact that the city is a coastal harbour on the canal and thus it's a port. In addition to that, its development started in the era of Khedive Mohamed Sa’id Pasha, ruler of Egypt, so the new city was called after his name.

Port Said City has a unique location in northeastern Egypt, on the Mediterranean Sea, at the northern entrance of the Suez Canal. It is the entrance point for the ships entering the Suez Canal from the Mediterranean Sea.

Port Said City​ History​

Port Said City has always had a significant historical value rooted in its strategic location as one of the Canal Cities. 

The city’s development started back in 1859 when the French Diplomat Ferdinand de Lesseps suggested digging the Suez Canal. As a result of the suggestion, Khedive Mohamed Sa’id Pasha declared the beginning of Port Said’s development to be a residential city as well as an industrial port for Egypt. 

Later in the 60’s and 70’s, and due to its strategic location on the Suez Canal, the city played a crucial role in the war.
